Lord Subramanya (popularly known as Lord Muruga in Tamil Nadu and Lord
Karttikeya in North India) who is widely worshipped as the serpent deity and
as forgiver of all doshas connected with serpents normally called "Naga
Dosha", "Sarpa Dosha" and "Kalasarpa Dosha". In South India, especially in
Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, this Lord is very widely worshiped in the
serpent (naga) form.
Lord Subramanya is called Sarpa Dosha Nivaraka (remedier). In the Southern
part of India, almost in all temples and also under the peepal tree (aswatta
vriksha) along the road sides, Naga idols are installed on platforms. You
can see such platforms built at the entrance of every village with different
type of idols duly installed on it. Each type of idol is earmarked as a
remedy for a particular type of dosha or fulfilling a particular wish of the
devotee.
What then are these Naga Dosha, Sarpa Dosha and Kalasarpa Dosha?
Astrologically, when Rahu-Ketu conjuncts other planets or, in other words,
the other planets are under the nodal influence of Rahu and Ketu, it is
treated as "Sagraha Sarpa Dosha".
Kalasarpa Dosha is said to be caused when all the planets are hemmed on one
side between Rahu and Ketu. Depending upon the position of Rahu-Ketu and the
planets, twelve different types of Kalasarpa Dosha are said to exist. This
Dosha is believed to emanate by harming or killing a serpent (intentionally
or otherwise) and thereby hurting Lord Subramanya.
A look at the planetary movements during the last three decades show a great
influence of Rahu-Ketu on the planetary positions, resulting in this dosha
and sufferings to a large majority of the populace. Without going into the
complications of the formation of different kinds of Sarpa Doshas and
Kalasarpa Dosha, I would like to detail the effects of these doshas and the
various remedies suggested in overcoming these effects.
Many great personalities, who have performed wonderful deeds during their
lifetime are said to have suffered from Kalasarpa Dosha. To name a few:
Abraham Lincoln, Kitoor Rani Chennamma, Jhansirani Lakshmibai, Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru, Emperor Nero, Chengiz Khan, Jesus Christ, Mussolini, et
al. Although all these great personalities achieved great things in life,
their end was terrible. The point to note here is that among the great
personalities mentioned, five were killed.

Kalasarpa Dosha is said to cause several difficulties during the course of
one's life: unhappiness in the family, continuous loss in business,
miserable married life, childlessness, ill health, skin diseases, trouble in
eyes, ears and throat, poverty and financial difficulties, delay in
marriage, improper development of body organs, loss and litigations,
striving very hard to progress in life, always worried. People, who have
built their houses on plots after demolishing the snake pits, are found to
face ill health as long as they live in that house.

The remedial measures or poojas, suggested to overcome these doshas are
Nagaprathistha, Nagabali, Nagathambula, Naga Puthalika Vidhi, Navagraha
Shanthi and Kalasarpa Shanthi depending upon the type of Dosha. These poojas
have to be performed through people who are well versed in performing such
Shanthis. Kukke Subramanya temple in Karnataka, Sri Kalahasti temple in
Andhra Pradesh, Tirunageshwaran Kovil in Tamil Nadu are known places for
performing these Shanthis. Reciting the "Kanda Shasti Kavacham" and
performing pooja to the Five/seven-headed idol of Naga would mitigate the
sufferings to a great extent.
A person who kills a serpent invites serious Dosha onto himself. Such
persons often see cobras both in reality and in dreams. The effect of this
particular dosha is very severe. The remedy for this is to perform "Sarpa
Samaskara", similar to the "Samaskara" (ceremonies) done after the death of
a person. Kukke Subramanyaswami Sannidhi, near Mangalore in Karnataka is
considered sacred for conducting "Sarpa Samskara" and other shanthi poojas.

What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?

Kaal Sarp Dosh is all about faulty planetary position, with a snake like formation, found in the person’s natal birth chart. In a dosha like this, the planetary positions are such that Rahu (head of the snake) and ketu (tail of the snake) happen to fall on the beginning and end of the formation, respectively. There are many other ways by which Kaal Sarp Yoga can be formed, the moon in the eight house of the natal chart being one of the ways. However, there are no rules of thumb to Kaal Sarp Dosha and it requires a good astrologer to study the planetary position accurately. The person suffering from Kaal Sarp Yoga finds it difficult life to lead a happy life. He/she suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosha has problems in married life, loss of money and constant health problems. The Dosha can be cured and control by offering prayers to Lord Shiva at some chosen destinations. Srikalahasti is one of them.

Rahu-Ketu/ Sarpdosha/ Grahadoshas/Sarvadoshas Puja

Rahu Ketu Sarpdosha Puja is performed in order to minify ill effects of yoga. Thousands of devotees flock to Srikalahasti to get the desired results through this pooja. Many of these pujas are performed with ascertained results for those who suffer with marital discord, not begetting children, problems in jobs and many long-standing problems. The puja is performed to neutralize the malefic effects of the planets and cut out its negative effect on the life of the individual.

Rahu Ketu Dosh Nivaran Puja at Srikalahasti

Charges: Rs 600 per person. Only 3 people are allowed at a time on purchase of one ticket of Sarp Dosh Pooja. The charges are inclusive of the puja ingredients. A special rahu ketu pooja can be availed by paying Rs 1500 (excluding the dakshina).

The temple is renowned for the Rahu-Ketu Dosh Nivaran puja; there are hundreds of pooja performed daily. Srikalahasti Temple is mostly recommended for Rahu Ketu Pooja than for normal darshans. As the temple hosts number of different poojas, there are particular counters selling tickets for specific pooja. People must bear in mind that the cost for special pooja is inclusive of puja samagri (puja material).

The Pooja: The Rahu ketu Pooja lasts for 30-40 minutes, and it is always better to get the pooja performed during Rahukalam, preferably on Saturdays. Unlike other pooja that consist of hawan or homa (fire ceremony), the Rahu-Ketu Nivran Pooja is all done by chanting mantras for two metallic snake strips that represent Rahu and Ketu. Flowers and vermillion are sprinkled or proffered to the rahu-ketu representing metals while the mantra is cantillated to complete the whole puja routine. Mantra recitations are also done in favour of one’s gotra, caste and janamnakshtra . The person, in whose name the puja is offered, is required to discard their clothes and take bath after the pooja. The act is symbolic of doing away with the ill effects.

Note: It is suggested and advised to plan your journey exclusively if going for pooja as it takes fair amount of time for the completion of the same.

I recite the story of such Kumar as known to me ; Listening to this story ,relieves one of kushtha [skin diseases ] and other miseries .Shanmukha mahima relives us all of the pain and thus I recitethe story of Kumar parvat , kumar dhara and Shanmukha as told to Parvati by Shiva , also as known by conversation between Bramha and Narada as told by Sahasrabindu to his son shatabindu ,may this bring happiness to all and this bestow punya .

In tretayuga Sahasrabindu told thus to his son shatabindu ” oh dear son , I narate to you what shiva had narrated to his son Shanmukha in his childhood . Mahasesha ,one day tired of bearing the earth on his head ,prayed Lord Vishnu , Lord appeared and blessed Sesha to take a break and happily choose his dwelling place for sometime till then he would support the Bramhanda as Koorma . Then Sesha chose the best among the mountains Rushyashringa took the form of Subramhanya and resided peacefully for many years in Vishnu Dhyana .

Katyayani devi yearning for a son came to this ranges and did penance for many years observing anantpadmanabh vrat . Sesha ,happy with her penance and austerity blessed her to conceive and also established a avesha of his roopa in the child. Thus blessed with the boon , Agni entered the virya of Shiva , Parvati Devi gave birth to a Son of six faces [ Shanmukha ] . That blessed son , bowing before the Parents and after obtaining their permission .went away for penance in the western direction , in the Kshetra of Parshuram , Rushyashrung Ashrama , Shanmukha ,seated in the tapasyaof Shesha antargata Anantapadmanabh Swamy . Since Kumaar had undertaken tapasya , this came to be known as Kumar parvat . And the river that flew from this place is known as Kumardhara. Andthe linga here is known as kukelinga . Those who know this will be relived of the pains of the world . Thus Men should try his best to serve Kumar .Those who pray Skanda seated on a peacock will achieve all the desired . Just by mere recital of this devata’s name relieves off the sins . ”

Shaunaka asked ” Hey Mahatma , How come this place of Parashuram became Rushyashringa Kshetra ? how did subramhanya come to kumar parvat ? Why did he stand here ? Kumaardhara ,where did it origin and where did it flow towards ,kindly narrate the mahima !”

Remedial Measures for Sarpa Dosha

In our daily life, we come across the word Sarpa dosha. Let us examine what is Sarpa dosha? Sarpa is the race of Surasa, inhabiting the waters Bhogavati beneath the Earth. They are supposed to have human face serpent-like lower extremities their kings are Shesha, Vasuki and Takshaka. 7 or 8 of the Sarpas are particularly mentioned in Mahabharata.
Sarpa dosha and planetary dispositions:

Rahu occupying the eighth from lagna, identical with a malefic sign, in conjuction with or aspected by Sani, Rahu and Gulika in the eighth, Rahu occupying the badhaka Rasi in conjuction with Sani or aspected by Sani and Rahu and Gulika in the badhaka Rasis. If Rahu or Ketu is in the lagna, 2nd, 5th, 7th or 8th house, it is generally said to have Sarpa dosha. Ketu in the lagna called Manglya Sarpa Dosha causes delay in marriage. Ketu in the 2nd house called Aayurbhava Sarpa dosha creates longevity problems. Ketu in the 11th house called Putra bhava Sarpa dosha causes progency related problems. Rahu occupying the 8th from lagna, identical with a malefic sign, in conjuction with or aspected by Sani. Rahu and Gulika in the eighth, Rahu occupying the badhaka Rasi. 11th for moveable signs of Mesha, Karkataka, Tula and Makara, 9th house for fixed signs of Vrushaba, Simha, Dhannus and Kumba and 7th for dual signs Mithuna, Kanya, Dhannus and Meena Rasis.

It is widely believed that the childless couples will be blessed with a child, if they observe the Naga Panchami vratra. Those who read the story from the Mahabharata on the day of Nagapanchami after worshipping Sarpas will be greatly relieved from the problems due to Sarpa dosha. The impact of Sarpa dosha is so severe that it may create early curtailment of wedlock, by death of spouse or divorce, delay in progency or no progency and unexpected accidents.

Dosha Nivarana Mantra should be recited for 108 times daily for more results that are effective.

Purchase two silver Sarpa prathimas five headed and two bodied idols and worship on Tuesday and Saturdays for 18 weeks. Visit the temple of Lord Subrmanya swamy every day and worship. Wear Gomed in a silver ring in the middle finger. Perform pooja of Lord Narasimha. Sri Krishna Himself sincerely worshipped Lord Narasimha that the poison of the evil snake Kaaliya had no effect on Him. Chant Lord Subramanya swamy ashtaka every day with utmost faith and sincerity. Visit Rameswaram, Devipattinam and the Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam with your spouse and offer prayers. Perform Garuda Panchami Vratra regularly every year. Donate pulses to the poor on 43 Wednesdays.

Kal Sarpa Yoga is a situation that describes your position under certain planets and some zodiac signs.
If it has any effect it has all over your life. Only marriage do not come unto its ourview.
With such a heavily diced name the rituals are also gigantic. If you seek the advice of some pundit or purohit he will suggest numerous ways and means and will further your fear .
But, if you really mean to get relief. then pray to the Deity you worship or the Deity you respect most. Pray to Him / Her and ask to immunise the effects upon you. It is your Deity who can deliver you. The so called puja and rituals that the general pundits suggest is useless.
What is more, learn a bit about the Kalsharp Yoga or Dosha. Then proceed to ask your pundit what is it, you will find that you know more than the pundit/Brahmin.
I assure you, your own Deity, the one you pray or worship most, respect most or the Kul Devta you and your family worship can get your release from this situation. There is one certain formula. Since throughout your life you have worshipped a certain Deity or a God why should you go tje shelter of another one. If that deity is not powerful enough to deliver you from such a situation what is the use of keeping on worshipping the same !

My daughter is unwell since 8 mths,she has kaal sarp and we had got the puja done in triyambakeshwar,but the panditji says 3 month long puja has to be done,how?

Kaal sarp yog is formed when in an horoscope, all the seven planets comes between or hemmed between rahu and ketu. Rahu is considered serpent’s head and ketu is dragon’s tail. So the presence of kaal sarp yoga in an horoscope is considered particularly harmful as all the planets are surrounded by the serpent and thus loose their good impacts to a great extent which will make person less lucky, creates problems and delays in many important aspects of life.

When all the seven planets are on the same side of rahu and ketu axis and not a single planet is on the other side, the full kaal-sarp dosha is formed. If even a single plane is on the other side of this axis, then it is not a kaal sarp yog. In this case, partial kaal sarp yoga is formed which is a kaal sarpa yog of less intensity.

Having kal sarp yoga in horoscope doesn’t mean that person will be totally unlucky and devoid of all the good things of life. The overall results differs from person to person and it depends on other yogas in the particular horoscope. For example, if a person is having strong Raj yogas present or having four planets dig-bali or having two to three escalated or swagrehi planets in horoscope alongwith kaal sarp dosha, then the results of kaal sarp yoga will be minimized in this case by the strong good planets or yoga and major ill impacts will only be applicable in the major/minor period of rahu/ketu.

Misconceptions and blind beliefs in Astrology

It is highly unfortunate that in the land where Vedic astrology was born, most people, even a lot of astrologers, have a lot of misconceptions and blind beliefs about several basic facts of astrology. An astrologer propagates a wrong theory and a dozen people believe it . They tell a dozen more and soon it becomes an accepted norm! Misconceptions about Mangal dosha, Rakshasa Gana, Kalasarpa dosha and Sadesati have a lot of far reaching effects in our society full of superstitions, especially in marriage matters.

Mangal/Kuja dosha Rakshasa Gana Sadesati Kalasarpa dosha

Mangala/Kuja Dosha:

One of the biggest misconceptions and fears in the Hindu society with respect to marriage is the presence of Mangala Dosha or Kuja Dosha in the chart of a boy or a girl. I have seen a countless number of good matches being rejected by people just because the boy or the girl has Mangala Dosha present in the chart.

Even the various Shastras of astrology differ as to in which houses it is present, what the exceptions are and what the effects and remedies are. According to some authorities Mars is placed in the 1,2,4,7,8,12, from lagna causes Kuja Dosha. Some authorities omit the 1st house and some others omit the 2nd house.

Some astrologers thump the table and quote Parashara and Varahamihira to prove their point. To start with most of the astrologers only have a very hazy idea of the sastras. On top of that, let me tell you that the existing shastras and their translations are not very pure! Take for example the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra of Rishi Parashara. In chapter 2 verse 5-7 we have the following: "Rama is the incarnation of the Sun, Krishna of the moon, Narasimha that of Mars, Buddha that of Mercury, Vamana that of Jupiter, Parashurama that of Venus, Koorma that of Saturn, Varaha that of Rahu and Matsya that of Ketu". Sounds great. However, according to astrology Parashara was the father of Vedavyasa who wrote the Mahabharata. According to our calculations the Mahabharata period was 2500 BC to 3200 BC., or around 1200BC. according to the western historians. Buddha belonged to the much later and fairly authentically recorded period. He died in 544BC. Then how did Parashara say that Buddha is the Avatara of Mercury more than a millennium before? If he were forecasting then he would have clearly stated that "Buddha avatara will be born". Obviously some of the people who wrote the shastras added a few things of their own!

Rishi Parashara, in his Brihat Parasara Horasastra, chapter 81, verse 47 said the following: "If Mars is placed in the Lagna, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th houses, without any aspect or conjunction of the benefic planets, the husband of such a woman will certainly have an early death." So it is clear that if Mars has the aspect or association of a benefic, there is no dosha. It must be noted that in the very next verse, verse 48, he gave the other important exception as follows: "The yoga in which a woman takes birth and becomes a widow, if a male takes birth, he also becomes a widower. If a woman with the widowhood yoga marries a man with similar yoga, such yoga will be cancelled." So the 2nd exception given by him is that this feared dosha is cancelled if both the girl and the boy have mangal dosha.

However by and large the majority of the astrologers include the 2nd house also in the mangala dosha and accept the 6 houses. As there are 12 houses in a horoscope and as Mars in 6 houses causes Mangala Dosha, it simply means that 50% of the people born have Kuja Dosha of some level. Hence it goes without saying that this Mangala Dosha is not something which will ruin a person, because it is not the intention of God to condemn half of mankind.

The prevalent misconceptions are that, if a person has Martian affliction it will either ruin the marriage or will cause one's death or the death of the partner. Especially if a girl has Kuja or Mangala Dosha, called "Mangali", she is looked upon as a devil by the mother-in-law. Nothing can be farther than the truth. First let us examine what the Kuja Dosha is all about and how it affects marriage.

The planet Mars symbolizes courage, aggression, vitality, confidence, fighting spirit and warrior qualities. If Mars is placed in any of these 6 houses, it gives aggressive tendencies to either the person or the spouse. In certain cases if Mars is malefic to the native, it also gives danger to life, provided that other bad combinations are also present. These two are the main negative qualities. Hence the first reason for the "Dosha Complex" is that - in the olden days the ideal wife was regarded as one who is meek, obedient and submissive. Hence a girl with the so called Martian afflictions, who is likely to have courage and fighting spirit, was considered by our MCP society as a girl with "Dosha". The second possible reason for the "Dosha Complex" is that during the war torn middle ages when a lot of the sastras were written, a "Martian person", who is normally well built, courageous, aggressive and has fighting qualities, was a prime candidate to be recruited by the king for his army and hence the chances of his death or serious injury were quite strong. In the present changed circumstances it is foolishness of the highest order to be scared simply because one has Mangal Dosha.

However, Mangala Dosha is not something that can be ignored. It does cause marital discord. Before marriage it is very essential to match horoscopes for Kuja Dosha. If a person has Kuja Dosha in the horoscope the spouse must also have Kuja Dosha. This way the Dosha is cancelled. Otherwise both should be without any Dosha. Various "authorities and experts" have given a lot of exceptions and cancellations for the Dosha. They are so many that almost everything is cancelled! The truth is that in majority of the cases the so called exceptions and cancellations do not work.

P.S.Iyer's tips: In 1991 the late Sri P.S.Iyer, one of the acknowledged giants of Indian astrology and an authority on the marriage aspects, gave a discourse to several budding aspirants of astrology in Mr. K.N.Rao's house and I was one of the fortunate ones to attend it. He was quite clear in stating that Mangala dosha is present in 6 houses. This Kuja Dosha or Mangala Dosha must be examined from the Moon, Venus and Saturn also. He even gave the details of the percentage of Mangala dosha in each house. In 8th house the dosha is full, in lagna 1/2, in 7th 1/4, in 4th 1/8 and in 12th and 2nd houses 1/16. As per the exceptions and cancellations, he was very specific about the following:

No dosha if mars is in its its own house or exaltation house. No dosha if aspected by a benefic.

If a strong benefic is placed in the 9th house then the dosha of Mars in the 7th and 8th is cancelled.

However he also advised that apart from the Mars, the planets Saturn, Sun and Rahu also cause similar dosha! From the point of view of causing dosha, if Mars causes 100% dosha, Saturn causes 75% dosha, Sun causes 50% dosha and rahu causes 25% dosha. These doshas must also be evaluated similarly!

As per the koota matching his advise was to give more importance to dina, gana, rasi, yoni and rajju and less to the others. So much so for the nadi dosha fear!

The matching of horoscopes and especially the extent of Mangala Dosha is the job of an experienced astrologer and must be done after carefully analyzing both the horoscopes.
Rakshasagana

The second major misconception while matching horoscopes of marriage is Rakshasagana. Once again this becomes a highly objectionable thing in case of a girl.

While matching horoscopes for a marriage under the Koota matching system, the birth stars in which the Moon is placed at the time of birth, called Janma Nakshatra, in which the bride and bridegroom are born, are analyzed and matched for various compatibility factors. One of them is the Ganas of the nakshatra. All the 27 Nakshatras come under 3 groups. They are Deva Gana, Manushyagana and Rakshasagana. If both bride and bridegroom are born in the same Gana then the matching is supposed to be the best. So the best combination is Deva-Deva, Manushya - Manushya and Rakshasa-Rakshasa. In the Gana matching this combination gets 4 out of 4 points. The next best is between Deva-Manushya and Manushya-Rakshasa. This gets a score of 2 out of 4 points. The last and worst combination is Deva-Rakshasa which gets a score of 0 out of 4 points. This is as per the detailed South Indian Dasha Koota matching system. In the North Indian Ashtakoota Matching system the Gana matching is allotted 6 points and you get either 6, 3 or 0.

Unfortunately too much importance is given to this Gana matching because of two reasons. Firstly as in case of Mangala Dosha, the person born under Rakshasagana has more confident and aggressive tendencies and hence this becomes a major taboo for a girl. Secondly a good Gana matching enhances prosperity. However, what the average public and even a lot of astrologers fail to take into account is the fact that, out of the total 35 point Koota matching, the Gana matching carries only 3 points. What is even more important is the fact that out of the 9 planets we are only taking into account the Ganas of the stars in which the Moon is placed at birth and totally ignoring the Ganas of the stars in which the balanced 8 planets are placed.

Hence it is foolhardy to attach too much importance to Gana dosha.
Sadesati

One of the most terrible periods, according to the believers in astrology, is the dreaded 7-1/2 years of Saturn transit called "Sadesati" in North India and "Elinatishani" in South India. When the transiting Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from one's Rasi, i.e., where one's Moon is placed in the birth chart, it is called Sadesati. ( Saturn takes 30 years to make one round of the zodiac hence 2-1/2 years in each sign multiplied by 3 = 7-1/2 years).

While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. On an average every man has to go through at least 2 sadesatis during his life time. The results of the sadesati transit vary considerably from person to person depending on the planetary configurations in one's birth chart. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does not deny you success. For example when Mrs. Indira Gandhi became a Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1964, she was going through her Sadesati! In January 1966 when she became Prime Minister she was still going through her Sadesati!! There are thousands of people who not only got away scot-free during sadesati, but actually prospered during it.

All kinds of dreadful results are forecast by the astrologers to scare the people and apart from living under fear, people spend a lot of money quite unnecessarily on all kinds of remedies. Actually the pundits love Saturn, Mangal, Rahu and Ketu, the fearsome four names in Indian astrology, as they have given more money to them by way of remedies than the benefic like jupiter or sun!

There are plenty of remedies for sadesati, the most effective being the daily reciting of Hanuman Chalisa or the Dasaratha Shani stotra.

Saturn, which according to Hindu mythology is the son of Sun God, is an excellent planet. No other planet can give what Saturn can. It is not known who cooked up this nonsense, but rest assured that it is none of the Rishis from Parashara to Varahamihira. Obviously some new 20th century "Rishis" of Delhi and U.P!!

The latest astro-stunt by the "Pundits" is the introduction of "partial kalasarpa dosha". The basics parameters of this are undefined, so anyone may have it!! A lot of unscrupulous astrologers are scaring people about this dosha and extracting money for the so called remedies. The remedy of course depends and varies according to the financial status of the innocent man!

From practical point of view this is not found to be a hindrance to progress. I have the horoscopes of a lot of people who have this so called dosha and are doing quite well in life. One of the most notable exceptions is the horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru, the late prime minister of India. If someone can rise to that level with kalasarpa yoga, then its not a bad one really!!

Kala Sarpa Yoga is formed when Rahu Ketu hem in the planets in the natal chart i.e. if Rahu is 10 degrees Leo and Ketu 10 degrees Aquarius and all the planets are within these degrees, either from Leo to Aquarius or Aquarius to Leo (Vedic Astrology does not use the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). For this yoga to be complete, no planet should conjunct Rahu or Ketu. It restricts completely any indications of the charts. However capable the person, his life is impeded due to past Karma. 2. Wear a Gomed, about two and a half carets in size in the little finger.

3. Wear a special ring, shaped like a serpent with a small Gomed at the head and a Vaidurya (lahsuniya) at the tail. This ring is to be worn in the middle finger. Take a look at the following images - I could not capture the scale correctly, but the size of the stones is actually pretty small - less than 4 mm in diameter. Lord Subramanya is called Sarpa Dosha Nivaraka (remedier). This ancient temple dedicated to Shiva is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams (temples celebrating Shiva as the embodiment of the primary elements), air being the element in case here, the other five temples being Tiruvannamalai (Fire), Chidambaram (Space),Tiruvanaikkaval (Water) and Kanchipuram (Earth) respectively.

Kalahasti is located near the pilgrimage town of Tirupati and is visited by thousands of pilgrims. This temple is also associated with Rahu and Ketu, (of the nine grahams or celestial bodies in the Indian astrological scheme).

Antiquity: This temple has been referred to in pre-Christian Tamil literature. The Tamil Saivite saints of the 1st millennium CE have visited this temple and sung its fame. The adjoining hill Dakshina Kailasam has many a fine Pallava carving.

The Tamil Cholas and the Vijayanagara Rulers have made several endowments to this temple. Adi Sankara is said to have visited this temple and offered worship here. There are Chola inscriptions in this temple which date back to the 10th century CE.

The Telugu poem 'Sri Kalahasti Satakam' explains the traditions associated with this temple.Muthuswamy Deekshitar, one of the foremost composers in the Karnatic Music Tradition has sung the glory of this temple in his kriti 'Sree Kaalahasteesa'.

Other works on this temple include the Sree-Kalattipuranam of the three brothers Karunapprakasar, Sivapprakasar and Velappa Deekshitar, Tirukkalattipuranam by Aanandakoottar of Veerainagar and Tirukkalatti Ula by Seraikkavirayar.

Architecture: The vast west facing Kalahastiswara temple is built adjoining a hill, and on the banks of the river Swarnamukhi. At some points, the hill serves as the wall of the temple. The temple prakarams follow the contour of the adjoining hill and hence the temple plan is rather irregular. North of the temple is the Durgambika hill, south is the Kannappar hill and east is the Kumaraswamy hill.

Krishnadevaraya built a huge gopuram, a few feet away from the entrance to the temple. The entrance to the temple is crowned with a smaller tower. There is an underground Ganapati shrine in the outer prakaram, while in the innermost prakaram are the shrines of Shiva and Parvati.

The present structure of the temple is a foundation of the Cholas of the 10th century, as testified by inscriptions; improvements and additions were made during the subsequent years of the Chola rulers of Tamilnadu and the Vijayanagar emperors.

The Manikanteswarar temple, also in Kalahasti dates back to the period of Raja Raja Chola I (early 11th century), and it was reconstructed in stone in 1196 by Kulottunga III. Shiva here is also referred to as Manikkengauyudaiya Nayanar. There is also a Vishnu shrine in this temple.

Legends associated with this temple: The legend here is similar to that of the Jambukeswara temple at Tiruvanaikka. Shiva is said to have given salvation to a spider, elephant and a serpent who were ardent devotees of the Shiva Lingam located here. The spider is said to have attained salvation in Kritayuga (the first of the four yugas in the Hindu tradition), while the elephant and the snake were devotees in Treta Yugam, the succeeding aeon. The elephant's devotional outpouring was a source of disturbance to the serpent's display of devotion and vice versa, resulting in animosity between the two, until Shiva's intervention gave both the devotees their liberation.

Kannappa Nayanaar, a hunter is said to have been a great devotee of Kalahasteeswarar. Legend has it that he offered his own eyes to the Shivalingam, and for this reason earned the name Kannappan (his original name being Thinnan), and the distinction of having his statue adorn the sanctum. Nakkiradevar, Indra, Rama, Muchukunda and others are believed to have worshipped Shiva at this temple.

Festivals: Maha Shivaratri which occurs in the Tamil month of Maasi (Feb 15 through March 15) is one of the greatest festival seasons here, and the celebrations are marked by processions of the deities. The fifth day of the festival in the month of Maasi coincides with the Maha Shivaratri.

Access and Accomodation: Tirupati (30km) is the nearest airport and is perhaps the most convenient base for visiting Kalahasti as it (Tirupati) is endowed with several modern lodging facilities. A one day trip from Chennai is also possible, as Kalahasti is well connected by road with Tirupati and with Chennai and is only a four to five hour drive from Chennai. If well planned, Tirupati, Tirumala and Kalahasti can be covered in a day's trip from Chennai by car.

In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are shadows but not general planets like other seven.

1. Ananta Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 1st house , Ketu in 7th house and all planets between them

2. Kulika Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 2nd house , Ketu in 8th house and all planets between them

3. Vasuki Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 3rd house , Ketu in 9th house and all planets between them

4. Sankhapala Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 4th house , Ketu in 10th house and all planets between them

5. Padma Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 5th house , Ketu in 11th house and all planets between them

6. Mahapadma Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 6th house , Ketu in 12th house and all planets between them

7. Takshaka Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 7th house , Ketu in 1st house and all planets between them

8. Karkotaka Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 8th house , Ketu in 2nd house and all planets between them

9. Sankhanath Kalasarpa Yoga – Rahu in 9th house , Ketu in 3rd house and all planets between them

If all the 7 planets are situated between Rahu and Ketu then Kaal Sarp Yog is formed. Therefore it is essential that such natives should arrange for remedy of Kaal Sarp Yog so that lucky planets of the horoscope could render favorable results.

Recite Hanuman Chalisa every day.

Kala Sarpa Yoga is not as horrible as it is painted to be. It can be remedied in most cases. The rare combination of Kala Sarpa yoga is found in many powerful personalities.

When all the seven planets are encircled by Rahu and Ketu in a birth chart, the unfavourable Kala Sarpa yoga is formed. It expresses karmic nemesis. The natives born with this yoga generally suffer from poverty, childlessness and professional setbacks in life. There are twelve types of Kala Sarpa yoga, according to the axial positions of Rahu and Ketu.

Remedial Measures: -

Natives having Kala Sarpa yoga, are advised to worship Lord Ganesh, Goddess Durga, Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman in the order mentioned here and recite the following mantras 27, 54 or 108 times, as per convenience.

Worship Shiva Linga adorned with a snake, made of Silver, on Maha Shivaratri day. Complete the recitation of the Shiva Panchakshari mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' 1,25,000 times, before Maha Shivaratri every year.

Perform abhishek for Lord Shiva on Pradosha days.

Recite mantras of Lord Bhairon 1,25,000 times. Wash away a pair of snakes made of Iron or Bronze in a river. Worship Shivalinga decorated with a snake made of Copper daily.

Perform abisheka to Shivalinga daily with water and offer flower and sandal paste for atleast five years and recite Rudrashtaka.

Remedial Gems: -

Wear Lapiz Lazuli or Lajavrata in a silver amulet. It may be of 2 to 8 Rattis, depending on the age and weight of the native. If the planet is posited within 2° from Rahu or Ketu, remedies for that planet is required, especially in the case of Sun or Moon. If the eclipsed planet rules over a benefic house, then gems for that planet must be worn.

The remedy I have heard of is to perform TRIPINDI PUJA/NARAYAN NAGABALI at a plcae where the god SHIVA temple is SWAYAMBHU(i.e.the shivalinga was naturally found,say coming out of earth etc.)In Maharashtra,itis done at Trimbakeshwars near Nasik by some people.But it depends on one's faith if thsi pooja can really help. The RAHU PEEDA normally ends after 42nd year of lifewhere KSY is present.

Hi,

The remedy of course depends and varies according to the financial status of the innocent man! From practical point of view this is not found to be a hindrance to progress. I have the horoscopes of a lot of people who have this so called dosha and are doing quite well in life. One of the most notable exceptions is the horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru, the late prime minister of India. If someone can rise to that level with kalasarpa yoga, then its not a bad one really!!

kalasarsapa dosha is a much talked about malefic yoga though it does not have approval of ant standard astrological text.

The dosha happens when all the planet either including or excluding Lagna is hemmed in between Rahu and Kethu axis.

From my experience I have observed people with such yoga toiling more than what is required to get their desires full filled . further obstacles in all matters of life posing great challenge in life.

Obiviously you have to appease Serpent god and or Rahu and Kethu in temples specifically prescribed. Kalahasthi near Tirupathi, thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam, Mannarasala and Pampumekkadu in Kerala are some of the South indian temples. If you are staying in north india You are advised to enquire in your area . further you may also worship Durga or Kali for redressal.

There are a number of yogas in an horoscope of which some are benefic while others are malefic. Kaal Sarpa Yoga is one of them.The occurrence of this yoga is a rather rare phenomenon but in common parlance, a pessimistic view is expressed about its results. Due to concentration of planets on one side of the zodiac, native feels a psychological pressure on him & probably due to this, he has to work hard & struggle throughout his life.

History of Trimbakeshwar temple

There was built a city which later on became famous as Trimbakeshwar. In the period of the Peshwas regime Nana Saheb Peshwa had instructed to construct the Trimbakeshwar temple and developed and beautified the city of Trimbakeshwar.

Religious significance

The Hindu belief is that those who visit Trimbakeshwar attain salvation or Moksha. Trimbakeshwar is considered as the most sacred town India. There are many reasons for this belief. Godavari originates from the Brahmagiri hills in this town and it is believed that it is the birth place of Lord Ganesha, known as place of Tri-Sandhya Gayatri. This place is believed to be the holiest and ideal place to do Shraddha ceremony, a Hindu ritual for the salvation of the soul.
Sinhastha Mahatmya speaks of Lord Rama having made the Yatra at Trimbakeshwar. A shraddha on the river Godavari gives great satisfaction to the forefathers. If it is not done in this place, it is considered as a religious sin. So Ganga Pujan, Ganga Bhet, Deh Shuddhi Prayaschitta, Tarpan Shradha, Vayan, Dasha Dana, Gopradan etc. Rituals are done in Trimbakeshwar. Mundana and Tirtha Shraddha are also performed here. The Lord Shiva at Trimbakeshwar is worshipped by recitations of Rudra, Rudri, Laghu Rudra, Maha Rudra or Ati Rudra puja. Actually Rudrashak is a religious fruit which is said to be found in lord Shiva's neck in the form of Rudra garland. Some of the trees of Rudrashak are also found in Trimbakeshwar.

The holy Jyothirlinga circuit will be complete with the visit to this sacred Shiva temple.
Other facilities at Trimbakeshwar
The public and religious institutions in the town are Veda shala, Sanskrit Pathashala, Kirtan Sanstha, Pravachan Sanstha, two gymnasiums, Lokmanya Free Reading Room, municipal office, post and telegraph office, Bus station, dispensary and a police sub-inspector’s office. Pradakshina (Ring routes/ Pheri)
There are two pradakshinas (ring routes) in this kshetra - one round the Brahmagiri and the other one round Hariharagiri. Pilgrim has to go for pradakshina with holy garment early in the morning visiting and bathing in various tirthas. The tour is to be completed in either a day, three days.

Godavari River

Brahmadev worshipped God Trivikram when he came to Satya Loka (on earth) with the same holy water of the Ganges, to get the river Ganges held up by God Shankar on his head, to flow. River Ganges in the form of a woman was enjoying with Lord Shiva, which was noticed by Lord Shiva's wife Parvati. She planned to drive Ganges away from her husband.

Parvati and her son Ganesh came to live in Gautama's Ashram with Parvati's friend Jaya. There was a famine of 24 years and people were affected by the pangs of hunger. However, Varun - the God of Rains, pleased with Sage Gautama arranged rains every day in Gautama's Ashram (dwelling place) which was in Trimbakeshwar. Gautama used to sow rice in the surrounding fields of his Ashram in the morning, reap the crop in the afternoon and with it fed a large group of Rishis, who took shelter in his Ashram on account of the famine. The blessings of the group of rishis increased the merit (Punya) of Gautama. Lord Indra's position became shaky because of his increased merit. So Indra ordered clouds to rain all over Trimbakeshwar, so that the famine will be over and Rishis will go back and the increasing merits of Gautama will be weakened. Although the famine was over, Gautama urged the Rishis to stay back and kept on feeding them and gaining merit.
Once he saw a cow grazing in the paddy field and he drove her away by throwing Darbha (sharp, pointed grass). The slender cow died by this. It was Jaya - Parvati's friend, who had taken the form of a cow. This news upset the Rishis and they refused to luncheon at his Ashram. Gautama requested Rishis to show a way out of this sin. He was advised to approach Lord Shiva and request him to release Ganges and a bath in the Ganges would set him free of his sins.
Gautama then practiced penance by going to the peak of Brahmagiri. Lord Shankara was pleased by his worships and gave him the Ganges. However, Ganges was not prepared to part with Lord Shiva, which irritated him. He made TandavNrutya (dance) on the peak of Brahmagiri and dashed his jata there. Frightened by this action, Ganges appeared on Brahmagiri. Later on Ganges appeared in the Trimbak Tirtha. Gautama praised her but she off and on appeared on the mountain at various places and disappeared in anger. Gautama could not bathe in her waters. Ganges then appeared in Gangadwar, Varaha-tirtha, Rama-Laxman tirtha, Ganga Sagar tirtha. Still Gautama could not bathe in her waters. The Gautama surrounded the river with enchanted grass and put a vow to her. The flow stopped there and the tirtha thus came to be called Kushavarta. It is from this Kushavarta that the river Godavari flows up to the sea. The sin of killing a cow by Gautama was wiped off here.

Pujas performed here

This place is famous for lots of religious rituals (vidhis). Narayan Nagbali, Kalsarpa Shanti, Tripindi vidhi etc are done here. Narayan Nagbali puja is performed at Trimbakeshwar only. This puja is performed for three days. This puja is performed on special dates (muhurt). Some days in the year are not suitable to perform this puja. This puja is performed for many reasons like to cure an illness, going through bad times, killing a Cobra (Nag), childless couples, financial crisis or you want to perform some religious puja to have a peacefull & happy life to you and your family members.

Narayan Nagbali Vidhi-
Narayan Nagbali consists of two different rituals. Narayan bali is done to get rid of ancestral curse (pitru dosh /Pitru Shaap) while Nag bali is done to get rid of sin performed by killing snake, specially Cobra which is worshipped in India. It can be performed only at Trimbakeshwar.
Narayan Bali ritual is done to fulfill the unsatisfied desires of the ancestral souls which are stuck in the world and trouble their progeny. Narayan Bali consists of the same ritual as Hindu funeral. An artificial body mostly made of wheat flour is used. Mantras are used to invoke such souls who are having certain wishes remaining attached. The ritual makes them possess the body and the funeral frees them to other world.
Nagbali ritual is done to get rid of sin of killing nag (Cobra). In this ritual also the funeral is performed on the body of snake made with wheat though.
Narayan Nagbali is one of the main rituals performed at Trimbakeshwar. Ancient scriptures like Dharma Sindhu, which describes various religious rites, mentions that this particular ritual should be done only at Trimbakeshwar. The references are found even in Skandh Puran and Padma Puran about this age-old tradition.

Kalsarpa yoga Puja-
Combinations of planets formed specific position in the Horoscopes are called Yogas. YOGAS play an important role and enjoy a prominent position in Hindu Astrology. Trimbakeshwar Temple
History Legend goes that a sage name Gautam Muni resided on the Brahmagiri hill with his wife Ahilya. By virtue of his devotion, the sage received from Varuna, a bottomless pit from which he received an inexhaustible supply of grains and food. The other rishis, jealous of his fortune, arranged for a cow to enter his granary and caused it to die as Gowtam Rishi attempted to ward it off with a bunch of Darbha grass.

Gautam Rishi, therefore, worshipped Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down to his hermitage to purify the premises. Pleased with devotion, Shiva requested Ganga to flow down and make Sage Gautam pure. After that Ganga flowed down. Lord Shiva told Ganga to stay there eternally for the good of everyone. All the Gods started singing the praises of Gautam Rishi, Ganga and Lord Shiva. On the request of all the Gods, Lord Shiva resided by the river Gautami by the name Trimbakeshwar (one of the Jyotirlingas). Hindus believe that Trimbak Jyotirlinga is one, which fulfills everyone’s desires. It emancipates all from their sins and miseries.

Another popular legend behind Trimbakeshwar Temple is the legend of Lingodbhava manifestation of Shiva. It says once Brahma and Vishnu searched in vain to discover the origin of Shiva who manifested himself as a cosmic column of fire. Brahma lied that he had seen the top of the column of fire and was hence cursed that he would not be worshipped on earth. In turn Brahma cursed Shiva that he would be pushed underground. Accordingly, Shiva came down under the Brahmagiri hill in the form of Tryambakeshwar. Trimbakeshwar Temple is the only place where Shivlinga is not out but it’s inside the floor.

Some scholars say that Goddess Parvati also came down along Lord Shiva and Ganga. The place is therefore called Tryambakeshwa (three lords). Others believe that the place is so called because of the presence of three Shivlinga of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The Shivlinga of Lord Mahesh has always-flowing water among the three Shivlingas.

Trimbakeshwar Temple The entire black stone temple is known for its appealing architecture and sculpture and is at the foothills of a mountain called Brahmagiri. Three sources of the Godavari originate from the Brahmagiri mountain.
Trimbakeshwar temple is imposing with ancient Hindu temples’ architectural styles.
The existing temple was built out of basalt after it was commissioned by Peshwa Nanasaheb. It so happens that the Peshwa made a bet on whether the stone surrounding the Jyotirlinga, is hollow from the inside or not. The stone was proved to be hollow, and on losing the bet, the Peshwa built a marvelous temple out of it. The Shiva idol of the temple consisted of the world famous Nassak Diamond. It was appropriated by the British in The Third Anglo-Maratha War and lies with one owner or the other ever since. The diamond presently lies with Edward J. When was the temple built and by whom ?
The work of constructing the present temple of Trimbakeshwar was begun by Shrimant Balaji Bajirao alias Nanasahib Peshawe in 1755 in the first half of the Margashirsha month (around December) and was completed in 1786. It took 31 years to construct the temple and the cost of 16 lacs then. There are three “Linga” of the size of a thumb and they are called as Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh - the creator, the organizer and the destroyer. These lingas are natural ( emerged naturally )Water of Ganges flows over the Linga of Shiva. The grant of Rs. 1000.00 per month was given for performing puja and offerings etc. The deity is worshipped here thrice a day and an additional worship with flowers at pradosha time.

Structure of Trimbakeshwar Temple
Trimbakeshwar Temple is an ancient shrine, however the current structure is a result of the reconstruction efforts undertaken by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in mid 18th century. The temple
is built of black stone in the Nagara style of architecture and is enclosed in a spacious courtyard. The sanctum internally a square and externally a stellar structure houses a small Shivalingam - Tryambaka. The sanctum is crowned with a graceful tower, embellished with a giant Amalaka and a golden kalasha. In front of the garbagriha and the antarala is a mandap with doors on all four sides. Three of these doorways are covered with porches and the openings of these porches are ornamented with pillars and arches. Curvilinear slabs rising in steps form roof of the mandapam. The entire structure is ornamented with sculptural work featuring running scrolls, floral designs, and figures of gods, yakshas, humans and animals.

The Shivalingam is seen in a depression on the floor of the sanctum. Water constantly oozes out from the top of the Shivalingam. Usually, the Shivalingam is covered with a silver mask but on festive occasions a golden mask with five faces, each with a golden crown covers it.

Kushavart Trith Kusavarta, a kund is considered the symbolic origin of the river Godavari, and revered by Hindus as a sacred bathing place.

Religious significan
Kushavarta is called as Teertharaj, since it has six corners. After finishing the tirtha-yatra at Kushavarta, a pilgrim should proceed by the northern bank of Godavari and visit Nilsangameshwar, Vivah Vinayak, Satya Narayan, Dhaneshwar Mahadev, Tarangeshwar, Setupaleshwar etc.
Kushavarta was a large area. Shreemant Rao Sahib Parnekar has built up the banks with stone pavement and with verandahs on all sides. Near Kushavarta is Kanchan and Kankhala tirtha where , the it is said , that dead human bones disappear. The flow of Godavari runs from this place. There are temples at the four corners of Kushavarta. On the south east conrner is the temple of Kedareshwar Mahadev, who in disguise of Kedarbhatta made Gautam to bathe in the waters and gave him prayaschitta (repentance) for the sin of killing a cow. To the south-west is Sakshi Vinayak , who is a witness to the yatra -vidhi of all pilgrims. To the north-west is Kusheshwar Mahadev and to the north-east is the temple of Godavari. It is said in Trimbak Mahatmya that Godavari was pleased with Gautam and gave him her “Darshana” - appearance in person . At this place the Godavari temple is built.
History
To the rear of the temple Gangamandir, Shrimant Peshawa has built a big caravansary where Rama and Karpureshwar Mahadev are enthroned. There is a separate temple of Ashwini Kumar in front of Gangamandir. There is a big Ashwattha Narayan tree in front of Kushavarta tirtha. In addition, there are temples of Jwareshwar Mahadev and Kanchaneshwar and statues of Dash Avatar and of thirty-three kinds of deities. The old holy books say that by the order of Lord Shiv, all deities stay here in person, during the period of Sinhastha Parva, to wipe off their sins and to get themselves purified.

Kedareshwar Temple Kedareshwar temple in Trimbakeshwar is located in the picturesque area known as Kushavarta. This temple is on the South East corner of Kushavarta. The temple is dedicated to Kedareshwar Mahadev, one of the forms of Lord Shiva. The temple resembling age old style of Hindu caves.

Legends tell that Lord Kedarnath appeared in the form of Kedarbhatta to save Saint Gautama from the sin of killing a cow. He made Gautama to take bath in the water flows through the place assumed to be from Ganga and hence saint had performed the repentance.

Kanchan and Kankhala tirtha are nearby attractions. It is believed that from here dead human bones disappear.

Other important Tirth around Trimbakeshwar Bilwa Tirtha Bilwa Tirtha is to the north of Nila mountain. It is one of the five tirthas. There is a temple of Bilvakeshwar Mahadev built by Naro Vinayak Gogte in 1738 at a cost of Rs. 25,000.00
Gautam Tirtha Gautam Tirtha is to the south of the Ganges and the Trimbakeshwar temple. Varun being pleased with Gautam gave this tirtha as a permanent source of water. To the north is Gautameshwar and to the south is Rameshwar Mahadev. This tank is 600 x 400 ft and is built by Shrimant Pandit Zashivale at a cost of Rs. 50,000.00
Indra Tirtha Indra Tirtha is to the east and near Kushavarta. This is known as Shakra-Kupa for Indra wiped off his curse given by sage Gautam for enjoying Ahilya, by a bath in this tirtha. This is built with cut stone in octagonal form by Vishnu Mahadeo Gadre at a cost of Rs. 22000 in 1778. On the bank of the tirtha is a beautiful temple of Indreshwar Mahadev with an idol of Indra seated on an Airavata elephant.
Besides this there are Vishwanath tirtha, Nilambar tirtha or Moti-tank, Mukund tirtha, Prayag tirtha and Veni-Madhav and other Mahadev temples on the bank of Prayag tirtha. Here is a matha of Nirvana Sampradaya (sect) Nilganga tirtha and nilsangameshwar Mahadev temple are on the north bank of Godavari.
Ahilya Sangam tirtha To force Gautam to give up his penance, a friend of Ganga named Jatila took the form of Ahilya, Gautam’s wife. Gautam could make it out and cursed her to be transformed into a river. Then she begged his pardon. Gautam granted her pardon and said that she will be freed of her curse on her joining with Godavari river. This is the Ahilya-Sangam tirtha where Ganga and Godavari join. There is a temple of Sangmeshwar Mahadev.

Sant Shreshth Shri Nivruttinath Maharaj Samadhi Temple
The elder brother and Guru of Dnyaneshwara took Samadhi here . In his memory a temple is built. Devotees come to visit this temple. There is a three days festival in this temple in the month of Pausha - sometime in January.
Sant Nivrutti Nath Samadhi is located at Trimbakeshwar. Saint Nivrutti Nath was the elder brother of great saint Gyandev. Nivrutti Nath was assumed to be the Guru of Gyandev and Nath sect started with Nivrutti Nath.

Legendary stories tell that after the Samadhi of Gyandev, Nivrutti Nath went for a pilgrimage along with his sister and they were caught in natural disasters like thunder storms. He lost his sister during this calamity. Nivrutti Nath attained Samadhi at Trimbakeshwar.

The temple erected on the Samadhi of Nivrutti Nath attracts thousands of devotees. The temple is preserved with all its cultural and traditional values and the aesthetic ambiance at this place makes it a famous pilgrim center.

Brahmagiri Mountain
the Brihmagiri Mountain 18 K.M. from the city of Nasik in the Nasik district. This is one of the parts of the Sahayadri Vallies. The city of Trimbakeshwar is located in the bottom of this mountain. This is a beautiful natural place with the cold weather as it is situated 3000 ft. above from the sea. There are two different routes to get to here. From Nasik to Trimbakeshwar, it is only 18 K.M. This route was built by the help of Shri Kashi Nath Dhate in A.D. 871.
This is one of the parts of the Sahayadri Vallies. The city of Trimbakeshwar is located in the bottom of this mountain. This is a beautiful natural place with the cold weather as it is situated 3000 ft. above from the sea. Original Ganges and Trimbak Tirtha are on Brahmagiri mountain adjacent to Trimbakeshwar temple. Brahmagiri is considered as a huge form of Lord Shiva and hence the mountain climbing was considered as a sin. However in 1908 Seth Lalchand Jashodanand Bhambhani of Karachi and Seth Ganeshdas built 500 steps of stone at a cost of Rs. 40,000 then. This has facilitated easy access to Brahmagiri. Godavari is flowing in three directions on the mountain. The one flowing towards east is called Godavari, one flowing towards the south is called Vaitarna and the one flowing towards the west is called the west-flowing Ganga and meets Godavari near Chakra Tirth. River Ahilya meets Godavari in front of the Trimbakeshwar temple. Childless families worship at the Ahilya sangam and it is believed that they do get a child
The first peak of Sahyadri is called Brahmadri. The story associated with this is that Shankar was pleased with Brahmadev and said “ I shall be known by your name”. Hence it is called as Brahmagiri. The mountain is 1800 feet high . Its height from sea level is 4248 feet. Five peaks of this mountain are called Sadyo-Jata, Vamdev, Aghora, Ishana and Tat-Purusha and are considered as five mouths of the Lord Shiva and they are worshipped
Brahmagiri hill is the place where the famous River Godavari originates. The source is on the top of the hill. After its emergence from this spot, the river appears first time only half way on the hills. This place is known as Gangadwar. The name Gangadwar (way or passage of Ganga) come from the legendary stories relating to Brahmagiri and Ganga.
Brahmagiri, the hill (giri) of Lord Brahma, appear in many mythological and legendary documents. Legend says that the saint Gautam and his wife Ahalya resided on this hill. Saint Gautam worshiped Lord Shiva to bring Ganga in this hill. This river is known as River Gautami in the Brahmagiri hills.
The undulated terrains of Brahmagiri are challenging spots for adventurous travels like nature walk and trekking. There are many trekking trails nestled among the woody trees. The ranges are rich with natural attractions and scenic spots.

One can reach this place by an ascent of about 750 steps made on concrete. There is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The river appears here as coming out from the mouth of Nandi. Kolambika Devi temple and a group of 108 shivalings are seen nearby. Gorakhnath cave is few steps down from Gangadwar.
Gangadwar Mountain
Gangadwar is half way to Brahmagiri mountain. There is a temple of Ganga, now known as Godavari River. Ganga appears first time here, after it vanishes from Brahmagiri Mountain. Godavari comes to Gangadwar from Brahmadri. There are 750 steps to Gangadwar. These were built by Karamsi Ranamull of Village Maska. The work was commenced on 1st of Chaitra in Samwat 1907 and was completed on 5th of Chaitra Samwat 1918 by Seth Hansraj Karamsi. Gangadwar is one of the five tirthas. There is an idol of Ganga and near her feet is a stone of the shape of cow’s head through which Ganga water is flowing drop by drop.
Nearby is Kolambika Devi, Varah tirtha further on is the cave of Gautam for practicing penance where there are 108 Shivalingas. A little further on is Gorakh Gumpha, a place where Gorakhnath practiced penance, the idol is worth seeing. After descending a few steps, Ganga flows from the roots of Audumbar tree. This is known as Rama-Laxman tirtha. Here Rama stopped for a few days and did Shraddha ceremony in memory of Dasharatha. There is Rama temple and Gopalrao Ghanekar built it at a cost of Rs. 25000.00 in 1857. Ganga Sagar is a big tank in the flow of river and is 300 x 400 ft. Shrimant Rajebahadar built it about the year 1678. The Ganga Sagar water is distributed in the village nearby.

Gorakhnath Gufa
Gorakhnath Gufa is a famous cave located at the halfway ascent in Brahmagiri hills. It is located few steps down to Gangadwar. The cave is intriguing with many attractive carvings. The gufa is on the premises of the Shrine dedicated to Goddess Ganga in The Brahmagiri hills.
It is believed that the noted Guru Gorakhnath had undergone penance here in this cave. Devotees offer prayers at this Gufa to remove all the sins committed during the earthly living. The beautiful serene ambiance in the region make it a pleasant spot for pilgrimage.

Ram Lakshman Tirtha Ram Lakshman Tirtha is located just few steps down to Gorakh Gumpha. Gorakh Gumpha was the place where Guru Gorakhnath practiced penance for removing the sin of killing a cow. At this location, River Ganga flows from the roots of a big Audumbar tree. This flow of Ganga in this hilly terrain of Brahmagiri hills is known as Rama-Laxman tirtha.
Legends teach us that Lord Rama spent few days at this Tirtha to do the Shraddha (rituals for the salvation of the souls) for his father Dasharatha. There is a Rama temple at this location. The temple is built by Gopalrao Ghanekar in 1857.

Nilparvat Mountain Neel Parbat (Peak) is located on the eastern side of Brahmahgiri hills. This peak is amazing with undulated and unexplored regions. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
The present structure of the temple complex was built by Nana Saheb Peshwa during his regime between 1755-1768.It is Hemad Panthi style temple and its architecture is shaped mechanically. It is East facing temple and surrounded by four sides with stone walls. Trimbakeshwar temple has 5 domes and each tomb has five golden pots. The flag of the temple is made of the 5 substances. The flag and the golden pots were donated by Anna Saheb Vichurkar.
The lotus flowers behind the idol look real. There is arrangement for devotees to stand in a queue during darshan time. On the entrance a small temple of Nandi comes first. There is a small hall or sabhamandap to assemble. Here purohits perform different pujas.
Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is in a small hollow space, which contains a pot of water. Water from the river Godavari constantly pours on the top of linga. The Jyotirlinga is unique as it has three faces embodying Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu & Lord Mahesh (Shiva).Generally the Jyotirlinga has a silver cover on festive occasions it is adorned with a golden cover of five faces each with a golden crown.
Performing Puja at the temple
It is said that a devotee who wants to perform puja should bathe and enter the main enclosure in wet dhoti. But it appears that it is not followed strictly. One can manage this by paying some money to Rs 150 or Rs 200 to the priest as advance Dakshina.
There is no fixed rate structure for puja here as in the case of other jyotirlingas. It all depends on the deal a devotee strikes with priest. Still it is in quite affordable range of Rs 101 to Rs 151. All pujas are performed at sabhamandap or small hall inside the main temple.

Temple timings and related information
Temple is managed by Shri Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Trust. However, pujas are controlled by purohits .There are three main pujas performed every day. Pujas are between 7 to 9 am, noon puja at 1 pm and sayam puja between 7 to 9 pm. During the night worship, sheja arti is carried out and a silver mask placed on a bed in a hall of mirrors.
Every Monday between 3:30 and 5 pm, a palki (palanquin) carries the silver panch mukhi mukhota (five faced image of Lord Trimbakeshwar) from the temple complex to nearby Kushavrata Tirtha and back. An abhishek is performed there. The palki processions carry a golden crown during Shivaratri, Kartik Purnima and Dussehra. The special golden crown of the Lord donated by the Peshwas is also shown to devotees once a week on every Monday at 4:30 pm.
Nagbali-Narayan Bali-Kalsarpa dosh Puja
The puja is performed at the place called Sangam (confluence) of the Godavari and its tributary Ahilya, which is just outside the Trimbakeshwar temple. The pujas are performed daily during the morning hours.

Interestingly, locals refer to the river here as Ganga and not as Godavari. All the heavenly Gods promised to come down to Nasik, once in twelve years, when Jupiter resides in the zodiac sign of Leo. On this a grand fair is organized at this place. Devotees take a holy bath in the Gautami Ganga and then seek the blessings of Trimbakeshwar.
Legend Behind Trimbakeshwar Temple

Legend goes that a sage name Gautam Muni resided on the Brahmagiri hill with his wife Ahilya. By virtue of his devotion, the sage received from Varuna, a bottomless pit from which he received an inexhaustible supply of grains and food. The other rishis, jealous of his fortune, arranged for a cow to enter his granary and caused it to die as Gowtam Rishi attempted to ward it off with a bunch of Darbha grass.

Gautam Rishi, therefore, worshipped Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down to his hermitage to purify the premises. Pleased with devotion, Shiva requested Ganga to flow down and make Sage Gautam pure. After that Ganga flowed down. Lord Shiva told Ganga to stay there eternally for the good of everyone. All the Gods started singing the praises of Gautam Rishi, Ganga and Lord Shiva. On the request of all the Gods, Lord Shiva resided by the river Gautami by the name Trimbakeshwar (one of the Jyotirlingas). Hindus believe that Trimbak Jyotirlinga is one, which fulfills everyone's desires. It emancipates all from their sins and miseries.

Another popular legend behind Trimbakeshwar Temple is the legend of Lingodbhava manifestation of Shiva. It says once Brahma and Vishnu searched in vain to discover the origin of Shiva who manifested himself as a cosmic column of fire. Brahma lied that he had seen the top of the column of fire and was hence cursed that he would not be worshipped on earth. In turn Brahma cursed Shiva that he would be pushed underground. Accordingly, Shiva came down under the Brahmagiri hill in the form of Tryambakeshwar. Trimbakeshwar Temple is the only place where Shivlinga is not out but it's inside the floor.

Some scholars say that Goddess Parvati also came down along Lord Shiva and Ganga. The place is therefore called Tryambakeshwar (three lords). Others believe that the place is so called because of the presence of three Shivlinga of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The Shivlinga of Lord Mahesh has always-flowing water among the three Shivlingas.

Narayan Nagbali consists of two different rituals. Narayan bali is done to get rid of ancestral curse (Pitru dosh /Pitru Shaap) while Nag bali is done to get rid of sin performed by killing snake, specially Cobra which is worshipped in India. It can be performed only at Trimbakeshwar.

Interestingly, locals refer to the river here as Ganga and not as Godavari. All the heavenly Gods promised to come down to Nasik, once in twelve years, when Jupiter resides in the zodiac sign of Leo. On this a grand fair is organized at this place. Devotees take a holy bath in the Gautami Ganga and then seek the blessings of Trimbakeshwar.

Legend Behind Trimbakeshwar Temple
Legend goes that a sage name Gautam Muni resided on the Brahmagiri hill with his wife Ahilya. By virtue of his devotion, the sage received from Varuna, a bottomless pit from which he received an inexhaustible supply of grains and food. The other rishis, jealous of his fortune, arranged for a cow to enter his granary and caused it to die as Gowtam Rishi attempted to ward it off with a bunch of Darbha grass.

Gautam Rishi, therefore, worshipped Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down to his hermitage to purify the premises. Pleased with devotion, Shiva requested Ganga to flow down and make Sage Gautam pure. After that Ganga flowed down. Lord Shiva told Ganga to stay there eternally for the good of everyone. All the Gods started singing the praises of Gautam Rishi, Ganga and Lord Shiva. On the request of all the Gods, Lord Shiva resided by the river Gautami by the name Trimbakeshwar (one of the Jyotirlingas). Hindus believe that Trimbak Jyotirlinga is one, which fulfills everyone’s desires. It emancipates all from their sins and miseries.

Another popular legend behind Trimbakeshwar Temple is the legend of Lingodbhava manifestation of Shiva. It says once Brahma and Vishnu searched in vain to discover the origin of Shiva who manifested himself as a cosmic column of fire. Brahma lied that he had seen the top of the column of fire and was hence cursed that he would not be worshipped on earth. In turn Brahma cursed Shiva that he would be pushed underground. Accordingly, Shiva came down under the Brahmagiri hill in the form of Tryambakeshwar. Trimbakeshwar Temple is the only place where Shivlinga is not out but it’s inside the floor.

Some scholars say that Goddess Parvati also came down along Lord Shiva and Ganga. The place is therefore called Tryambakeshwa (three lords). Others believe that the place is so called because of the presence of three Shivlinga of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The Shivlinga of Lord Mahesh has always-flowing water among the three Shivlingas.

Structure of Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar Temple is an ancient shrine, however the current structure is a result of the reconstruction efforts undertaken by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in mid 18th century. The temple is built of black stone in the Nagara style of architecture and is enclosed in a spacious courtyard. The sanctum internally a square and externally a stellar structure houses a small Shivalingam - Tryambaka. The sanctum is crowned with a graceful tower, embellished with a giant Amalaka and a golden kalasha. In front of the garbagriha and the antarala is a mandap with doors on all four sides. Three of these doorways are covered with porches and the openings of these porches are ornamented with pillars and arches. Curvilinear slabs rising in steps form roof of the mandapam. The entire structure is ornamented with sculptural work featuring running scrolls, floral designs, and figures of gods, yakshas, humans and animals.

The Shivalingam is seen in a depression on the floor of the sanctum. Water constantly oozes out from the top of the Shivalingam. Usually, the Shivalingam is covered with a silver mask but on festive occasions a golden mask with five faces, each with a golden crown covers it.

Narayan Nagbali consists of two different rituals. Narayan bali is done to get rid of ancestral curse (Pitru dosh /Pitru Shaap) while Nag bali is done to get rid of sin performed by killing snake, specially Cobra which is worshipped in India. It can be performed only at Trimbakeshwar.

Trimbakeshwar town is ideally located in a naturally scenic location on the banks of the holy river Godavari. Godavari River originates from It. Three tributaries of Godavari originate from this mountain range.
